A Miraculous Transfer

Elder Espiritu wasn't able to write a letter this week with all that has happened but he has been able to video chat with us. Here’s the happenings on his mission this past week:

During our video chat with Elder Espiritu last Sunday, he told us his mission president informed him he would be transferred. He wasn’t told where, just that he would be transferred. Transfers were to be the week of March 16th.

Last Thursday night, we heard from Elder Espiritu. He informed us he had been transferred off the island of Palawan early and was now in his new area in Manila. We now know why! Sister Raelinda Fermanis, his mission president’s wife, shared this insight that morning on the Manila Mission Facebook page (see image below). How grateful we are for answers to prayer and for inspired leaders who follow impressions from the Holy Ghost!

A few days before this transfer, Elder Espiritu was very sick and had a fever. Since he was on the island of Palawan and not in Manila (where the Coronavirus had 140 cases as of today), the Mission nurse knew he didn’t have it. She told him to take some medicine.

Unfortunately, he mistakenly took the wrong dosage, which made him sicker.

On Wednesday, he got a call from Sister Owens, the Sister in charge of travel, to tell him that he and a few missionaries were headed to Manila close to a week earlier than transfers. They left for the airport at 2 am. He had no idea why or where he was going. He actually thought he was in trouble for taking the wrong dose of medication! haha

President Fermanis interviewed him and he was so scared! He called him to be one of the missionaries in charge of supplies in the Mission office. He will be in a threesome for a month with Elder Kyle Sessions (Clearfield, UT) who goes home next transfer and Elder Briton Burke (Gilbert, AZ) who is in his batch. President Fermanis let him know he will be in this calling for 6 transfers to assist in the transition of the new Mission President (who arrives in July 2020).

He is in a big apartment with his 2 companions and the 2 Assistants to the Mission President. Their apartment is walking distance from the mission office. They are part of the office staff.

Since arriving there on Thursday, he has been working very hard non-stop. Since transfers was early, he helped with new missionaries from the MTC, getting their name tags, ordering supplies, distributing mail, and even driving around Manila traffic running errands. His companion drove but eventually, he is supposed to get his Philippines driver license to drive around Manila. If you have been to Manila, you know driving there is no easy task! ☺ Philippine driving is much more aggressive and the rules are different.

They are usually in the office by 8:00 am and they leave around 4 pm to proselyte in their areas.  Elder Espiritu and his companion’s assignment is the Makati 3rd ward. He is looking forward to working with their ward.

That same day after transfer with very little sleep, they visited the Elders Quorum President, Evan Albania. He looked at Dallin and said, “I know you---you’re Eddie Espiritu’s son! He was my trainer in the Philippines Baguio Mission over 30 years ago!” What a small world! He told us, “I can’t seem to escape anything.  Everywhere I go in the Philippines someone knows me because of Dad or Mom or Joseph (his brother who also served in the Philippines).

Since he’s been there, Manila has been on lockdown (no domestic flights in or out of the city), curfew has been ordered by the Philippines President from 8 pm-5:00 am until April 15th to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

All entrances to Metro Manila have checkpoints with military checking IDs and performing temperature scans on each person entering city limits. Buses are sanctioned to practice social distancing by only allowing 20 passengers on 40-passenger buses.

The normally very busy Manila bustling with crowds and traffic is now empty and quiet. Elder Espiritu feels very safe and appreciates what the government is doing to stop the spread of the virus. We are all praying it ends soon so that missionary work can continue.

Overall, he is adjusting well to his new area, his new companions and his new responsibilities. They are allowed to proselyte but have to follow the curfew (at their apt by 8 pm) and practice general hygiene and social distancing.

He was very sad to miss their ten year old convert, Mary Desabayla’s baptism last Saturday in Palawan. He did get pictures of the baptism from his old companion. He misses the people in Palawan but he is also looking forward to serving in his new area and things getting back to normal after this pandemic is over. In the meantime, he has faith our Father in Heaven and our Savior Jesus Christ are watching over us during this very challenging time.

First Talk At Church In Tagalog

What's up everyone!

I'm chillin over here in the Philippines, still loving this place and the people! This week we had zone conference. I learned a ton.

Before zone conference we were asked to study about Joseph Smith and "The First Vision". I loved studying about it. I didn't realize how many little things affected The First Vision and I'm so grateful for it. I know for a fact that The First Vision happened. That God the Father and his son Jesus Christ appeared to a 14 year old boy named Joseph Smith in the year 1820.

I had the opportunity to speak in sacrament meeting yesterday. It was my first time doing it and not gonna lie. I was super nervous. I'm grateful for the Holy Ghost that helped guide me through that talk. I talked about my family and related it to "The Plan of Salvation" and it turned out pretty good.

I'm grateful for all of you and all your examples to me. I encourage everyone to get ready for this upcoming General conference and pray that the spirit will guide us all so we can become closer to our Father in Heaven!

More from our video chat with Elder Espiritu:

He loved their Zone Conference. During one of their trainings, the missionaries were shown a video with Elder Uchtdorf. In it he urged the missionaries to be more “relatable” and flexible in their teachings. One of the suggestions by the Mission President was for missionaries try for a week to teach without their neckties. This is to test if people are more receptive to them.

Dallin also mentioned that they will be getting smart phones next month.

They’ve been given a directive from the Area Presidency in the Philippines regarding the Coronavirus.  Aside from practicing common hygiene, they’ve been strongly advised to avoid any physical contact with anyone including handshakes, fist bumps, etc. They’ve also been told not to enter the homes of members or investigators who are sick.

He gave his first talk in Taglish (Tagalog mixed with English) in his ward. His topic was on the Plan of Salvation. He talked about his nephew (our daughter’s son), Tristan who passed away at 5 weeks old 4 years ago this May. He expressed how he knew because of the Plan that he would see Tristan again.

He and his companion are preparing for another baptism this Saturday. Elder Dumanjug and Elder Espiritu have been teaching this little 10 year old girl who is the daughter of a family they’ve reactivated.

Prior to any baptism, each baptismal candidate is interviewed by a District Leader (DL)—a missionary over a District (usually 4-8 companionships assigned to a geographical area).

During this little ten year old’s interview, the DL asked the girl to read a scripture from the Book of Mormon. As she read, she paused and asked the DL, “Do you feel that? That’s the Holy Ghost!” The DL was so impressed at how perceptive this young lady is! She is definitely ready for baptism!

When asked about his language skills, Dallin said he’s able to understand & converse about 80%. That’s pretty good for someone who’s only been out 8 months (today is his 8th month)! He was able to carry a conversation with his older brother, Joseph who served in the Philippines Laoag Mission (Aug 2016-Aug 2018).

The MP (Mission President) already told him both he and his companion will be transferred this next transfer. Currently, they have a set of Sister missionaries working with them in their ward (Santa Monica 1st Ward). They are replacing the Elders with another set of Sister missionaries.

Dallin will find out next week where he and his companion will he headed. He is sad to be leaving his area and his trainee, Elder Dumanjug but he is excited about going to a new area.

Got a package from home!

Vans like these are used to bus the missionaries to the bigger buses to head to their areas. Half of the missionaries serve in Manila while another half serve on the islands of Palawan.

Some of the missionaries live close by and ride trikes (motorcycle drawn carriages) back to their apartments.

The Joy of Inactive Members Coming Back

Solid week! A lot of awesome things happened.

Yesterday Clark was able to receive the Aaronic Priesthood after sacrament meeting. That was awesome to witness.

The other Elders in our ward (Elder Larson and Elder Torres) had a baptism on Saturday. The person who was baptized is named Loyda. Loyda is such a good example to me. She actually doesn't have any arms and only has one leg.

While I've been here I've seen her come to church and make friends here in our ward. She is a huge example to me that even if we have trials in our lives we can overcome anything if we continue to follow Christ.

One more amazing thing happened yesterday at church. When Elder Nimenzo was here in November, we went to this one compound that has a ton of families that are less active in the church. So we continued to visit with them but they really didn't change.

Lately we've been teaching one of the families there and they came back to church for the last month or so. Yesterday, all of them came with all of their kids! It was amazing to see the change that people can have and the effect others can have on each other.

I love it here and I'm so grateful for all my experiences.

Love you all!
