A Common Question

Well it was good working again this week. It was a solid week! We found a ton of new people.

I had a lot of good personal studies focusing on my purpose here and why it's so important to be exactly obedient.

We extended a baptism date to this little girl named Mary Desabayla. She's almost 10. All of her family are members of the church but she hasn't been baptized yet. She has a baptismal date now!

One of new people we found to teach was this Tatay (father) named Digol. He recently had to amputate one of his legs a couple months ago. We found Tatay Digol through the old Branch President in our ward who is friends with him.

Tatay Digol is awesome. He is always home because of his leg still trying to recover. When we first went there he was very welcoming to us. I feel like all Filipinos know how to speak 9 billion different dialects here. Tatay Digol knows how to speak so many!

When we started to talk to him we told him that his friend Tatay Miaco (the old Branch President) told us to come to him. I'll just paraphrase what he said...he said something like "dang yaa that's my boi" but obviously it was different in Tagalog haha.

He said something that was really interesting to me. He said, "I'm 65 years old now and I'm still confused which church is true." With it being almost 200 years since our Savior Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father appeared to Joseph Smith I thought this statement was right on point.

It's such a common question still. People are confused which church on earth is true. We taught Tatay about Joseph Smith. It's crazy to think that's it's been almost 200 years since the first vision. Makes me so excited for this upcoming General Conference yaaaaa wohooo!

Love you all! Hope everyone has a good week!

We Can Relate Anything to the Gospel

Oh my this was a unique week.

The underground river tour we went on last week was fun and all but I got super sick from the boat ride. I was sick on Monday and Tuesday haha.

On Wednesday Elder Dumanjug told me his toe was hurting pretty bad. In the past he's had in grown toe nails. He said he had another one so we went to the hospital to get it removed like he's done in the past.

We waited around at the hospital forever for the doctor to show up. He finally did and told us in 30 min he would have Elder Dumanjugs toe nail removed. So we went into this room and the doctor removed it. It was the fastest thing I've ever seen in my entire life. One moment Elder Dumanjug had a nasty toe nail and then the next thing he didn't. It was  so bloody. It was crazy!

We didn't get to work much this week because I was sick and then Elder Dumanjug wasn't allowed to work because of his toe. Instead, we did a lot of studying which was a blessing. I realized something during this week that we can literally apply anything in our life to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I thought of this analogy about Elder Dumanjug's nasty in grown toe nail.

Before the doctor removed it he had to get a shot with a big needle in order to numb his toe so he wouldn't be able to feel it. Obviously the needle hurts for a minute until you don't have feelings anymore in your toe.

I was thinking that's how it is with repentance. When we sin and want to repent it's like a needle. It hurts pretty bad and stings at first as we feel Godly sorrow and think about our past sins. But through the Atonement of Jesus Christ we won't feel pain or feel bad anymore and it will become numb, or we'll feel clean.

Going back to the toe nail...once it was numb the doctor removed the whole thing and it was gone. Going back to the Gospel, as we repent more and more, we are clean and worthy to be baptized. And when we are baptized all our sins are washed away and we become clean. After it is removed, we need to constantly care for the toe so it doesn't become dirty or infected again. So in our lives, we need to constantly repent so we can stay clean and pure always.

We can relate anything to the Gospel in our life and I love it! I love you all! Have a good week.

Snippets from our video chat with Elder Espiritu:

He was throwing up and so sick Monday and Tuesday because of the boat ride. He’s learned next time when traveling by boat or plane to take some Dramamine.

They are teaching about 10 people but weren’t able to do much last week.

He gets along really well with his companion. He is very hard working and although he was in pain because of the in grown toe nail, he forced himself to work on Saturday and Sunday but had to wear flip flops (“chinelas” in Tagalog) because he wasn’t supposed to wear shoes until the toe has healed. Imagine how hard that would be walking in the dusty, uneven streets of their area! He was a trooper!

(Elder Dumanjug cut a hole in his sock so
he could tape up his toe. He wore his sandals
while we worked because he's not allowed
to wear normal shoes. He's a beast)

Translation of the video:

Elder Espiritu: Here is my companion.  What are your thoughts now? (to Elder Dumanjug). You are in pain but now in flip flops (tsinelas—pronounced “chee-neh-lahs). Woohoo!

Elder Dumanjug: It’s really painful.

Elder Espiritu: What do you have to say?  (Asking like a reporter)

Elder Dumanjug: I would like to thank my in grown toe nail (laughs).

Elder Espiritu: He’s shaking but we are still working.

**Dallin’s parents & some relatives who speak Tagalog think he speaks very well especially for only being out 7 months.

Some people that the other Elders
are teaching made this for us

Blessed With More Baptisms

Solid week! It was Mhey and Clark's baptism on Saturday.

Elder Dumanjug and I got to set up for the baptism. We made the programs, set up the chairs, cleaned the baptismal font, and filled it up too.

Something funny happened during the baptism. The baptismal font in our church is constantly draining for some reason so we needed to keep the water running throughout the program. I guess during the talks someone turned off the water so when we opened up the font the water was very low. When we baptized them we had to squat really low haha but it turned out really good still.

Mhey and Clark are awesome I'm so happy we got to teach them!

We have a couple of new people that I'm excited to teach. Thanks for your guys support much love.

Scripture: Psalms 27: 1 & 14

1 The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life of whom shall I be afraid.

14 Wait on the Lord be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart wait, I say, on the Lord.

Chickens

I love it here, even though I still get called Chinese, Japanese, or literally anything else other than Filipino 1,000 times each day. :)

**side note: this happened to Elder Espiritu's dad and brother, Joseph, when they served in the Philippines too. No one believed they were Filipino either! haha

I've seen so many amazing things happen in my life and others lives. For Elder Dumanjug and I our focus this week was Mhey (I finally figured out how to spell her name) and Clark. With their baptism coming up we've been meeting with them a lot, almost every other day. As we teach them, I can defiantly see that they're starting to understand everything.

It's really cool to see them change over the time we've known them. Mhey and Clark have been taught by previous missionaries in this area, so they know a lot already, but Mhey told us it's nice to review things again. Mhey said in the past she liked drinking coffee, but not so much now. A couple of weeks ago when we asked them to be baptized, we asked if she was willing to give up coffee and follow the standards of the Word of Wisdom. She said, "Of course if that's the way I can come closer to Christ!" I thought that was pretty cool.

During one of my personal studies this week I was reading in Alma. It was the part when Aaron was teaching king Lamoni's father. I found this scripture that related to Mhey. Part of Alma 22:18 says "O God, Aaron hath told that there is a God, and though art God, wilt thou make thyself known unto me, and I will give away all my sins to know thee".

This king was willing to give up ALL his sins to know our Heavenly Father. Mhye was willing to give up coffee to be closer to Christ. So are we all willing to give up all our sins to know our Heavenly Father, not just a couple but all of them? I really liked this experience and I'm happy it happened to me.

I've seen so many amazing things here on my mission and it's awesome!
